My grandpa always told me, ‘Celebrate your successes, because failures come twice as often.’ He was right, and it felt great to reach a new tier on my Spirit Absorption ability, as well as improving my rat affinity.

Even so, I received much less spirit from the dead rats, than I had spent in making traps to kill them. This was a big, big problem.

If Grim-Fur kept multiplying his brood and assaulting my lair, I wouldn’t be able to keep up. I needed a more powerful way to deal with them than by using traps. Or, I needed better traps. Either way, I needed to improve, and I just didn’t know how.

What I really needed, I decided, was a mentor. Someone who could direct my progress, and show me how to make the best use of my powers.

Yes, I needed someone to guide me along the Path. Core Mind was useful, but only for an overview. I needed someone who knew the Path, and who knew all the little shortcuts along it.

Just as I had this realization, a great rush of noise came from the main tunnel in my chamber. It was the loudest burp I had ever heard, followed by a groan.

“Oh, Tyler,” said Broddur, “I don’t feel well at all. Can you have too much of a good thing? Yes, is the answer.”

“What’s wrong?” I said. “I thought you loved eating rats.”

“Ugh. Please don’t mention rat, master. I’m beggin’ yer.”

“All those nice, juicy rats. In your belly. You must feel brilliant.”

“Master…”

“You know what, Broddur? I really rat you, as a trap. I mean rate.”

“You’re evil, master. A symbol of the purest, blackest evil.”

“Thanks very much. You’re not so bad yourself,” I said.
